Xylitol is a natural, low-calorie sugar substitute that has been approved and used during the last few decades. Chemically, xylitol, is a pentitol (five carbon polyol) or as they are alternatively called a sugar alcohol. It is produced mainly from birch and beech wood and this is the reason that xylitol is alternatively called birch or wood sugar. Xylitol has the same organoleptic properties as sugar, meaning that it looks and tastes like sugar, however it has a number of advantages over sugar. One of the main advantages is that it inhibits the creation of dental caries.

Dental hygiene is very important if one wishes to have long-lasting and good-looking teeth. This should begin at a very young age even as the first tooth erupts at the age of about 3 months. Healthy teeth can be maintained by simple procedures such as brushing and flossing and visiting the dentist regularly.

Dental care is an essential, yet sometimes neglected, aspect of a kid's overall health. Tooth decay affects in excess of one-fourth of U.S. children aged 2-5 and half of those aged 12-15. The key to effective brushing habits in kids is to start an oral health care program early itself. Good oral hygiene habits should be insisted as early as infancy and constant right through the life. This ensures that kids are not infected with cavities or gingivitis.

Today we're living in a time when everyone is concerned with their health and appearance. There are fad diets, break-through medications and plastic surgery. Now more than ever before, people are taking care of their bodies. But one thing that often gets forgotten in overall health is dental health.
